As a leading tutor of Saxon mathematics, Dan has been working with students across the United States since 2013. He progressed through the Saxon program himself, culminating in Advanced Placement Calculus BC as a senior at D'Evelyn High School in Colorado, in which he earned a 5 on the AP exam.
After high school, Dan attended Regis University on a full-tuition mathematics scholarship. He received his first Master's in Secondary Mathematics Education in 2018. Most recently in May 2020, he finished his second Master's (in Mathematics) from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dan began teaching as full-time instructor at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colorado during the first semester of COVID (January 2020). Dan took the opportunity during the pandemic to develop and hone his skills in the area of remote learning and across a two-year period, he was able to present at several conferences to share ideas that support student engagement and bring joy back into mathematics.
In addition to his responsibilities at Aims, he continues to help as many students as he can in Saxon Math (and other math curricula) in the remaining hours of the day when he is not spending time with his wife, two sons, and as of April 2021, his daughter.
Dan's other interesting experiences in education has included serving as an Ambassador for the You CAN Do The Rubik' Cube Program. He has presented at TEDxBoulder in 2018 on "Using The Rubik's Cube to Enrich STEAM Education." Additionally, Dan wrote the TED-Ed script for "Can You Solve Einstein's Riddle?" which as of January 2022 has over 11.6 million views.
Dan currently serves as the head Saxon Math Tutor and is hopeful to find other like-minded individuals who can not only tutor, but reteach the Saxon curricula to help students across the country. For now, he is the one to serve you!
During the Spring semester 2020, Dan received the Innovation in Teaching Award from Aims Community College.
He continuously tries to bring students to appreciate math and how it can be useful in problem solving and critical thinking, even through the rigors of the Saxon program.
In June of 2022, he earned the "Distinguished Colleague Award" from Aims Community College due to students' nominations.

Dan takes pride in using a variety of strategies to explain the material and review problems that students find in the Saxon textbooks. He has created resources to cut study time in half including a reference sheet for all of the different topics contained in the Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Advanced Math Saxon textbooks.
Currently, Dan uses Zoom as an online platform with a virtual whiteboard to explain difficult concepts to his students. He thrived as an instructor during the COVID pandemic where education was challenged. He finds that many students are comfortable when the environment for learning is light-hearted and fun.
Dan has served students in the following states (as of October 2022): California, Utah, Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Michigan, South Carolina, and of course, Colorado.
Dan will help your student by making homework time more efficient, study time more effective, and math itself stress-free!
Our goal is to help students who struggle with math to rebuild confidence and more fully develop study strategies to increase their abilities and desire to problem solve and apply critical thinking to their everyday lives.
For students (and parents) who are seeking to keep grades in a healthy spot (maintain eligibility for extra-curriculars, have a GPA that colleges look for, or to prepare for more difficult coursework down the road), we have methods to provide lessons that will take instruction to the next level by offering interesting problems to supplement the material they are covering at school.
In short, Dan and Saxon Math Tutors have the resources to provide an avenue for mathematical growth in any student!
*Students can provide nominations at Aims Community College called "Ripples." These are several that Dan has received across his time teaching at the college. He strives to tutor similarly to how he teaches. Read actual nominations below.*
"When it comes to math and me, we tend not to get along. With that said, for once in my 28-year life I feel complete optimism with the math course I am taking this summer. A majority if not all of the optimism I feel is in large part credit to my instructor Mr. Van der Vieren. He has gone above and beyond to make sure all of my peers and myself actually enjoy taking his class. Mr. Van der Vieren clearly shows that he enjoys what he does, from the constant smile on his face, to incorporating fun examples into his lecture, to making us all laugh loud enough you can hear the echos down the hall. If more math teachers adopted his style of teaching, I think that math would have a less dreaded appeal to students like myself who do not particularly enjoy it. Even though it is early in the semester Mr. Van der Vieren has exemplified he loves what he does and he truly does care about each and every one of us in his Trigonometry class, and for that reason I nominate this gentleman for a Ripple award. He has definitely made a ripple on my life as probably one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Keep up the outstanding work."

"He goes above and beyond. It is clear that he wants to see his students succeed. An example of him going above and beyond: I was struggling to understand a part of a project that we were working on. I email him on a Saturday about it not expecting him to get back to me about it until Monday. He got back to me within ten minutes and helped explain it better to me. Not only that, but he also jumped on a zoom call to walk me through how to do it so I completely understood what I was doing. I think that is amazing. He took time out of his day to help a struggling student. I do not doubt he does that for other students as well. He is probably the best professor I have ever had!"
-- Rachel S., College Student, August 2021
"Professor Van der Vieren has provided an exceptional work environment where we as students can learn effectively and efficiently. He has made an effort to make a strong relationship to his students not just as a professor who is present to help with questions or misunderstandings, but as a friend."
--Henry C., Concurrent Enrollment Student, November 2021
"He has always been a great teacher to me, he has taught in a certain way so that everyone may understand and doesn't move forward during course unless everybody's voice is heard. He will give you an "A" if you are willing to work for it, there are no shortcuts to his teachings only hard work and dedication. He is more than a teacher, he is a role model."
--Angel R., College Student, November 2021
"I can say with absolute conviction that Mr. VDV is unlike any math teacher I've ever met. He's a rare gem in the teaching world, easily capable of balancing fun and professional conversations in the classroom, making his class one that I (and many others) always look forward to. It's very evident to us students how a teacher feels about their job, and every time we walk into Mr. VDV's room (or, more recently, his zoom), he's enthusiastic and ready to start the day's lesson- be it on algebraic "fun"ctions or the applications of logs and exponentials. Furthermore, he's so good at his job that he knows what we need before we do. For example, he sends us videos (that he makes) for every single unit, focusing on what he can see we have trouble with; he also encourages us to ask questions and is always ready with an inspirational anecdote or math pun when we're struggling, making him easy to approach and fun to talk to as well. Because of Mr. VDV, we learn so much more than just math in College Algebra, and I can't think of any teacher at my school more deserving of the Ripples Award."
